Frequently Asked Siding Questions

Common takeoff, measurement, and material estimation questions answered by our engineering team.

What is the formula for converting wall square footage to siding squares?

One siding square equals exactly 100 square feet of finished wall coverage. The formula is: Siding Squares = (Net Surface Area in sq ft × (1 + Waste%)) ÷ 100. For example, a net wall area of 1,500 sq ft with 10% waste requires (1,500 × 1.10) ÷ 100 = 16.5 squares.

How many cartons of vinyl siding do I need to order?

Standard horizontal vinyl siding (such as Double 4" or Double 4.5") is packaged in 2-square cartons (200 sq ft per box). Always round up to the nearest whole carton: Cartons = ⌈Required Siding Squares ÷ 2⌉. Single 7" insulated panels are typically packaged in 1-square (100 sq ft) boxes.

How do I calculate triangular gable siding?

Calculate triangular gables using the geometric formula: Gable Area = 0.5 × Base Width × Peak Height. For standard roof pitches, two identical gables can be calculated together as Base Width × Peak Height. Add a 12–15% waste buffer for gables to account for 45-degree rake cuts.

What accessories are required in a complete siding takeoff?

A comprehensive takeoff requires Starter Strip (matching the bottom wall perimeter linear feet), J-Channel (around windows, doors, and gable rakes), Outside/Inside Corner Posts (10-ft lengths matching corner heights), and Weather-Resistive Barrier (house wrap rolls under IRC R703.2).
